With the holidays swiftly approaching, it is important to realize that hospitals will be packed. With children off for the holidays, students coming home for break, and cold weather bringing illnesses out, waiting rooms will be at full capacity. It is important to plan ahead and make sure that you are aware of your healthcare options during the busy season. Here are some tips to navigate holiday healthcare.

Find the Healthcare Services You Need Throughout the Holidays

Many healthcare providers will have special holiday hours, leaving many out of luck when an emergency arises. Many healthcare centers are urging patients to only go to the ER if it is in fact an emergency. With heavy wait times as it is, clogging the ER with non-emergency patients will only worsen the problem.

Dr. Phil Schieldrop, the medical program director of Emergency Medicine at Stratford General Hospital offers a few tips to people in the wake of the holidays. Dr. Schieldrop urges everyone to make sure their families have all their needed medication to make it through the holidays. Also knowing the office hours of all needed doctor offices and pharmacies will avoid an unnecessary ER visit.

It is also important to know what is offered and Urgent Care or Minute Clinic offices. Something like an ear infection, fever, rash, flu, or other general illnesses can be taken care of at a quick last-minute appointment at your local pharmacy. But once again, be aware of the holiday hours. These options not only help out busy hospitals but save you time and money. Here is a list of all services that can be taken of at a CVS Minute Clinic office.

Dr. Schieldrop also pushes the reality of holiday depression. With the pressure and demands of the holidays, it can be a stressful time for everyone. Depression should never be ignored or avoided, even on Christmas Day. It is important to know there are options to get help, even during the holidays. Options such as the 24-hour Crisis Hotline and the Suicide Prevention Hotline are ALWAYS available for those who need it, no matter what day or time it is.

If you must visit the emergency room, it is urged to come prepared. Having your ID, insurance card, and co-pay ready to go when your name is called can save more time than you may realize. Also, try to remember that everyone would rather be at home with their families during the holidays than having to sit in a waiting room. Expressing patience is also an important thing to do in order to make the whole process go faster.
