Geisinger Health System is Changing Patient Care
Geisinger Heath System has released that they will be refunding copays to patients that are unsatisfied with their spine and bariatric surgery. Yep, you read that right. A refund on your surgery if you are unhappy with the results. This type of radical development is definitely a different one.
This refund program is part of an experiment that Geisinger is testing at two of their hospitals. Medical Center in Pennsylvania and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. In conjunction with the refund, patients can use a new app called ProvenExperience to voice their feedback about the care they get with Geisinger.
Patients can get either partial or a full refund back by putting in a request through the app. The bariatric surgery costs $2,000 and $1,000 for spinal surgery. Once the request is received, patients will get their refund via check within three to five days.
Geisinger wants to take their patient care efforts a step further and offer more options for voicing their feedback on the surgeries, whether it be through paper, phone or online. Geisinger’s main goal is to track the “wrong doings” that may occur in their patient care so that they can correct it and make sure it will never happen again.
Before publicly displaying their new refund program, CEO of Geisinger, David Feinberg, has been giving refunds here and there to unsatisfied patients. It started with a letter written to Feinberg about an unsatisfied patient that was unaware of a $1,000 copay for his spine surgery. Although Geisinger did its job in providing information on the copay beforehand, Feinberg offered the patient a refund anyway.
Do you think this new wave of retail style satisfaction refunds will be the future of healthcare? If all goes well for Geisinger, the healthcare industry could change forever.
